WINES
YOU SHOULD GET TO KNOW
Pinot
Noir ’00 Santa Barbera – California
$40
A beautiful Pinot at a great price! Deep crimson colour, a mix of
black and red fruit on the nose, and a supple, rich palate of
raspberry, spice and black cherry. A joy to drink!
Merlot
‘00 Echelon – Central Coast (California) 9 $40
Bright flavours of cassis and plum, red berries and herbs. Rich, round
and surprisingly full-bodied with fruit in the foreground and oak in
the rear.
Cab.Sauvignon '00 Daniel Lenko – Niagara $42
Daniel Lenko is a hot, award winning boutique winery in Beamsville,
and we think this is one of the top Canadian Cabernets out there.
Nebbiolo
’01 Fontannafredda “Eremo” – Piedmont (Italy) $30
Great berry fruit flavour with hints of chocolate, coffee and
licorice. Round and smooth tannins. This is a rich, full-bodied red.
Zinfandel
’97 E& J Gallo “Frei Ranch” – Napa (U.S.A.) $47
1997 was a benchmark year for Califonia Zin. This wine is full-bodied
with succulent ripe berry fruit, spice and a finish that goes on and
on. Delicious!
Cab.
Sauv. / Shiraz ’00 Grant Burge – S.E. Australia 8 $29
A medium-bodied red that’s rich, with a cinnamon and spice bouquet,
hints of oak & a long, full, and soft finish.
Cab.
Sauvignon ‘01 Lillypilly – Australia $36
We always recommend this over that “other” Aussie Cabernet!
Lillypilly is a little lighter bodied, but has ripe, luscious fruit
– it’s a great “sipping” Cab at a great price.
Vino
Nobile di Montepulciano ’99 Avignonesi – Montepulciano
$50
Avignonesi has built their reputation on their Nobile. From a blend of
native Tuscan grapes, this has aromas of freshly picked cherries with
hints of raspberries. Medium-bodied, with smooth tannins and a fruity
finish.
Brunello
’98 Altesino – Montalcino (Italy) $85
Stunning nose of leather and spice, and it keeps going into a sweet,
smooth, refined palate full of big soft fruit. Ends with a massive
finish.
…AND
EVEN MORE REDS
Shiraz
’99 Len Evans – McLaren Vale (Australia) $50
A huge, full-bodied shiraz with rich and concentrated berry fruit, a
long flavorful finish and firm tannins.
Merlot ’00 Cave Springs – Niagara $33
A delicious, dark, full-bodied merlot with supple tannins and bright,
plummy fruit.
Cab.
Sauvignon ’98 Kenwood – Sonoma County (USA) $55
A consistent award winner with full body, complexity and lush wild
berry and currant flavours. Great California Cab at a steal!
Syrah
’02 Louis Bernard Cotes du Rhone – France $33
#41 in Wine Spectators top 100 wines of 2001. That’s all you need to
know!
“Rinascimento”
’99 Dievole – Tuscany $37
A blend of two ancient Tuscan grapes – Malvasia Nero & Canaiolo
Rosso. This is a dense, rustic wine with great body and a long, long
finish! (Something
different you’ve never had and well worth exploring!)
Shiraz
’01 Willowglen – Riverina (Australia) 7 $28
A winner of the Ottawa Wine Show Gold Medal, & quite a surprise
for the price – flavoursome with heaps of berry fruit with gentle
tannins and a long finish.
